Humanities to Go

Through Humanities to Go, our statewide speakers bureau, nonprofit organizations and community groups can offer high quality cultural programming to the public at minimal cost to the host. Every year, New Hampshire Humanities sponsors hundreds of Humanities to Go programs that are free and open to the public. Check out our online calendar to find a Humanities to Go program near you!

Who can apply?

Private nonprofit organizations; institutions of higher education; state, local, and federally recognized Indian tribal governments; institutions of the federal government; and community groups (groups of persons that form an association to carry out a project) are welcome to apply to host a Humanities to Go program. Organizations or groups that apply to NHH for funding must be constituted for nonprofit purposes. It is not necessary that such organizations or groups be incorporated or have tax‑exempt status. All Humanities to Go programs must be free and open to the public and serve residents of New Hampshire.

New hosts should review the Program Host Checklist before booking their first HTG program. You can also email htg@nhhumanities.org with questions.

HTG Booking Process:

Host contacts speaker with an invitation to present a program from our catalog.
Host and speaker find a mutually agreeable time for the presentation. Host must have agreement from the speaker on the date, time, place, format (in-person or virtual), and any additional details, such as technology available, before submitting an application.
The program organizer submits an application to New Hampshire Humanities at least two weeks in advance of the event.
New Hampshire Humanities reviews the application and, if approved, sends an award email. At that point, hosts must reconfirm with the presenter. NHH will provide a check to the host organization to cover the presenter’s stipend two weeks before the scheduled event. Host organizations cover the mileage of the Humanities to Go presenter at $0.65/mile for in-person programs.
Two-person programs receive two stipends and mileage for both presenters (unless they travel together).
Note: Living History performers may charge an additional fee. If you are booking a Living History presentation, ask the performer(s) about any additional fee at the time of booking. This additional amount is the responsibility of the program host, not New Hampshire Humanities. Only Living History performers may negotiate an additional fee through HTG.

Booking Windows

Hosts can submit an application to host a program in the following windows. Hosts are allowed to book 2 programs in each booking window.

Please note: NHH will stop accepting applications within a booking window once available funds are exhausted.

Once an HTG program is booked:

New Hampshire Humanities lists the program on our website. Host organizations should also advertise their event in their community. You can find tips and templates for advertising in the Humanities to Go Toolkit and the Publicity Tip Sheet.
In exchange for our sponsorship and promotional assistance, we expect hosts to credit NHH in promotional materials and tell the audience that NHH sponsored the program. For example, at the start of the program please say “This program is made possible by New Hampshire Humanities. Learn more at www.nhhumanities.org.” Please spell out “New Hampshire Humanities” in all written and verbal announcements.
Contact NHH immediately if there is ANY change in your program. If you must change the place, date, or time, call us at 603-224-4071 and email htg@nhhumanities.org. We will post cancellation and rescheduling information on our website and social media, as applicable. Alert your presenter, community, and media outlets as far in advance as possible with changes. Post notice of any change at the venue.

Hosts must complete and return the Host & Audience Evaluations to NHH within two weeks after the event. These evaluations can be completed online or downloaded and returned to NHH by email (htg@nhhumanities.org) or mail.

Humanities to Go Presenters

NHH is now accepting applications for new HTG presentations. Learn more about becoming an HTG presenter.

HTG Policies:

HTG programs must be free and open to the public. In limited situations, a program may be held in a setting that is not open to the public, for example, in a hospital or prison. The program organizer must contact New Hampshire Humanities staff to discuss any program that is not open to the public.
HTG programs cannot be used to advocate or lobby for a political cause, policy, social reform, or religion.
Humanities to Go supports only those programs that have been vetted by New Hampshire Humanities and are listed and described in the Humanities to Go Catalog of Programs and Presenters on our website.

Presenters may offer up to 5 different programs in the HTG catalog.
Presenters are limited to 25 presentations per fiscal year, November 1-October 31.
Presenters are responsible for their own schedules. Hosts should contact presenters directly to schedule a program. Contact information for all HTG presenters can be found on their presenter page, along with scheduling notes. Presenters are expected to return calls and/or emails promptly.
NHH will provide a check for the presenter’s stipend about two weeks before the confirmed program.
Living History presenters may negotiate an additional fee for their presentations, up to $125. Other HTG presenters cannot negotiate an additional fee. This additional fee is the host organization’s responsibility.

Host organizations are responsible for paying the presenter’s full roundtrip mileage at $0.65/mile if the event is in-person.
Hosts are responsible for providing the required technology for in-person presentations and setting up virtual meetings for hybrid and virtual presentations. Presenters are responsible for their technological needs (e.g., a computer) for virtual programs.
Presenters are expected to arrive on time for all scheduled programs.
New Hampshire Humanities’ support must be formally acknowledged on ALL printed materials and at the program.
No photography, audio or video recording is allowed without the presenter’s prior permission. This permission must be obtained in advance of the program.

If recording, please note that HTG programs are for educational purposes and New Hampshire Humanities must be credited in the recording by including the New Hampshire Humanities logo from our website and/or the words “This program is made possible by New Hampshire Humanities. Learn more at www.nhhumanities.org.” Any digital photographs or recordings to be sent electronically to New Hampshire Humanities [Attn: Rebecca Kinhan, Communications Director (rkinhan@nhhumanities.org)].
HTG is not intended as a medium for book or DVD sales, but New Hampshire Humanities does not object to presenters displaying and selling products related to their expertise at their programs if allowed at the venue. Presenters are responsible for inquiring about restrictions if they would like to sell books or DVDs.
